The last time we spoke about it he didn't want to get involved doing it on a commercial basis, although his skills are legendary!

I think you summed it up well in post number 16.
Whilst there are a couple of people that are capable of doing the work, are there many 'customers' who would be prepared to pay the 'going rate' for many many hours work for 'just a clean and polish'. Add in the responsibility and I can understand the unwillingness to 'do commercial work'.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

I have now serviced/fixed up a few of my own optics, but the idea of doing even basic to someone else’s would give me worry, on top of that charging a real rate for the time spent I think would put anyone off.

I think the biggest part for me is the unknown of if you have fabricate a spare part for first time and then knowing how it may perform over time. It is one thing if it’s your own or a friends but another if it is a customer.

If anyone needs No.32 parts let me know.
I have a decent assortment of parts and willing to spare a few.
I think a member or two on here can vouch for the quality of the parts.
That also includes glass lenses at a very affordable price.
I find scope work very relaxing and almost as good as a single malt..ALMOST!!!
Having parts is the main reason the repro scopes got such a bad reputation is that no one had parts and nothing worse than b**gering up a friend or customers scope.
Having a few parts for the repro scopes I was able to take a run at them and they are not that bad once "tarted up" a bit.
Just my 2 cents on the issue

Yes, Optical Repairs - Home - Optical Repairs - Malcolm serviced my No32 Mk3 scope last year and fixed the stuck drums
Have a look at his webpage which shows the Before and After pictures of a No 32 scope that he restored.
Also have a look at the giant WW2 Japanese Naval Binoculars that he also restored - and which I am lusting over...

Well, as they say:

A bit OT but that website is funny .. among the references it shows picture of a replica Zeiss Zielvier scope in a replica mount, and under that picture it is described as "Kahles scope"
