Since S was already taken, B for Bridgeport Works makes perfect sense. After all, SG and S'G' are for Saginaw Gear and I is for Inland, etc...

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Manufacturer of various vintage rifle scopes for the 1903 such as our M73G4 (reproduction of the Weaver 330C) and Malcolm 8X Gen II (Unertl reproduction). I Didn't Write it, Just Trying to Explain it.

I see your thinking, but SG and S'G' were Prime makers.
    SG- Saginaw Steering Gear.
S'G'- Saginaw Steering Gear: Grand Rapids Division.

We have to keep in mind that: "Ordnance recommended that the system Inland used should be adopted, where parts were marked subcontractor to prime contractor"
So every Prime had a marking system to ID their Sub Contractors.
Some of these Subs made parts for other Primes and used their ID on parts for that particular Prime.

Example: Firing pins made by Olsen Brothers Machine Tool & Saw Company which used OB B variations for I.B.M. but used SI for Inland.
Question- If B was designated to Singer, Would a B stamped part be confused with IBM?

The A-Z list is for Sub Contractor Markings for parts supplied to Underwood.
"This article is focused only on the subcontracted marked parts used by Underwood"
It also reads (for Underwood) ".....that no other code matched a city of the subcontractor, and then why not B for Brooklyn where Intertype was located."

No sense calling for a Dog that wont hunt. Not worth the effort to try to figure out what Ordnance had in mind.... Fubar comes to mind.

I do have a few favorite markings, like the F in a Heart ·U· Op Slide marking for Underwood, made by Frederick Hart & Co.
Or the Ψ ·U· Trigger made for Underwood by the Neptune Meter Co.

Though confusing and even aggravating at times, it was the markings I started seeing on My Fathers M1icon Carbine that peeked my interest.

    For you Jim,
Your just too used to Makers names Lined Out and Receivers being passed from one Prime to another just to end up with another. It's your Carbines that get 'Complicated'

When is the next show? You've done very well this year,

    Stay Safe,

    PS: 4-21 Happy Birthday JimB

Thanks for the Birthday wishes. Nobody said decoding carbines was easy or even made any sense. My point is simply that if S was already taken, then B, the production plant location, makes sense. And since IBM used IBM for their receivers, a simple B wouldn't/shouldn't be confusing. But sans proof, who really knows. Yes, I will admit to liking subcontract and lineout receivers. It fits with my normal state of mind; thoroughly confused! The next OGCA show is on May 8-9. Should be a good one. Its the annual display show. Always lots of interesting historic displays.
