    Internova A. S. R. 86 rifle, Australia

This was a private experimental venture circa 1988-1989 in an attempt to build a more robust but relatively lightweight, bolt-actioned "sniper rifle" in 7.62 NATO chambering.

I heard it referred to as "The Yabbie Pump" because of its tubular construction. Another interesting feature was the magazine was side-mounted a la the FG42 and came in capacities of 5, 10 and 20 rounds.

Mounted under the tubular fore-end was a vertical grip that could double as a monopod.

The bolt featured three lugs and a .75" diameter bolt body; Possibly patterned after or modified from an Omark 44 bolt.

Another feature was the extra-large trigger-guard, more than a little reminiscent of the arrangement of the F88 (Oz Steyr AUG) then coming into service.

The rifle and builder turned up a a couple of AASAM shoots.

    Designer / builder: Tony Montinari.

There was a little article about it in "The Militart Marksman" Rebruary 1989 edition.

    Anybody have any other information?

I remember that, it was interesting but had a few teething problems.
Tony had it on one of our sniper shoots, not very competitive, myself and Frank Taylor(two times champion shot of the Army) put a SSG Styr up against the Sniper teams, came in second.
I think Tony came in last, too many weapon malfunctions.

In retrospect, Tony was somewhat ahead of the design curve as it developed and his rifle being a "one-off" probably needed a few "refinements". I've bee party to building a few 'Tube Rifles" on Remington 700 actions: A whole new world of weird bedding and harmonic issues.

I'd hazard that very few designs are perfect at initial prototype stage. Interesting to read David Tubb's accounts of the long road to his "Tubb 2000" series.

Tried and true tend to be winners; both rifles and crews. I remember one AASAM, teaming up with a RAN shooter on his Parker Hale M-85. With very little trigger time on the beast, we managed to not completely disgrace ourselves. A mate from another unit showed up with an SSG, He had not had it long before the big day and did not set the world on fire, either.
