    My 2nd Krag

I picked up a barreled rifle action for real cheap. Doesn't look to be modified - full length rifle barrel with front sight base, just stripped of almost all it's parts. It came with the side plate screw, magazine cutoff and it's retaining pin, and one of the rear sight screws - so it need everything. No rusting anywhere but the chamber and bore, but some very minor pitting under where the side plate was.

Receiver looks good. There is part of the last thread of the barrel visible outside the receiver in the last pic. I need to check my original Kragicon to see if that is the case there too.

    Here is the chamber

Here is the throat, and midway down,

    and lastly the muzzle,

Bore has seen better days. The chamber looked worse than it was...15 seconds with an 800 grit flex-hone with lots of oil worked magic! (the 30-06 hone work well on Krags https://ads.midwayusa.com/product/1007046816)
    After honing...

I have my work cut out for me. I was originally thinking of making it a carbine, since I don't have one...plenty of new carbine stocks out there right now, but no barrels. If I keep it rifle length, there are new barrels to be had still, but no stocks.

I have the barrel soaking right now before I scrub it as clean as it will get before final decision. Anybody every done business with http://dunlapwoodcrafts.com/military-stocks? I emailed with no response, but they are just up the road from me so I will drop in. Website advertises they have a pattern for a full length Krag Stock and will make to order. If that is the case...I need to decide if it's gonna be worth going extra extra fancy on the wood, new rust bluing on the metal, the whole 9 yards.

I would do a black walnut straight grain stock if they make you one to order. It'll still look great after. If the barrel cleans up decent then a rifle is good too...easier than going through the effort of relocating the front sight for a carbine...

good call...or the correct rear sight for that matter. I was thinking to just use a rifle rear sight until I found the correct carbine one. With no barrels on the horizon though, I'm leaning heavily towards keeping it a rifle....
First things first, get the barrel cleaned out best I can and inspect, and make sure the receiver isn't warped. I can test fit with parts from my original Kragicon to make sure all is at least functional. I suppose if I want a new barrel I should get one sooner than later. I've heard rumors Criterion won't be making anymore military barrels - focusing only on AR's etc in the future.

I've read and reread those posts! Very useful.
I think I'll be pulling the barrel even if I keep it. There was some rust inside the little nook below the chamber. If it's going to last another 120 years and more, threads will need inspected and cleaned.

I could see doing that, glass bead everything and then polish and blue. All hand work of course...

well, progress has been made. Chamber polished, and I scrubbed the bore a first good pass. I opened a brand new phosphor brush, and it ate it...no more than 10 strokes and it didn't fit tight anymore . Scrub a dub dub, clean out solvent, switch to jb paste and kroil, flush all out, and here are the results. With the rust out, there was some copper under all the crud.

from the muzzle...my camera rod is only 24 inches, so not quite to the end
    birds eye view...

    side view...

I've seen worse shoot great, and virtually brand new shoot not great...but I think I'll get a new barrel. I'll let the threads on this one soak while I look for a good condition original (I don't have my hopes up), give the receiver another good going over and test fit parts from my original Kragicon to make sure fit and function are acceptable, then buy a criterion barrel.

I chatted with a gunsmith we all know and love here by phone...said he saw a picture in some magazine or other at a gunshow of workers installing barrels at Springfield. They used what looked like a large crescent wrench on the side flats, slipped on from the top...
    Attachment 117609
He said he uses a large crescent wrench, tightens it with pliers real tight to keep from slipping, and gives a yank...recommended just a BF wrench from harbor freight...they have one with a 2ft handle.
I don't doubt this method in the least...but I do doubt myself. It is indeed risky...to this point our friend won't do Kragicon barrels anymore. A less risky option is to buy one of rcathey's receiver nuts he was making...https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=65133 and give it a try first.

I inquired, but he isn't making them anymore.
Does someone have one they would rent me, or let me borrow? I'll post in the want to buy forum too. I may just find a welder friend and have him make me one of Doco's solutions...https://www.mdshooters.com/showthread.php?p=5109654

suppose I will go the BF wrench route first, cover the flats in aluminum tape to make it more grippy, and carefully try after soaking for good time in kroil.

Your take off barrel still won't be junk, you can likely sell to someone that wants original and no worry about inside. There ARE those...

oh yes. the couple stores I've found that have a rifle barrel with front sight base, in worse exterior condition than mine, want 250 or more for it. If I can sell at that, it's almost an even swap for a brand new one.

EDIT: Just ordered new 30" barrel from criterion. Free UPS ground shipping, and I found coupon code esydow13 that is still valid for 20% off....so I could make a profit and offset some parts selling the barrel after I get it off.
