    Krag 1896 cavalry carbine

SN. is 72398 mfg. 1897 all is correct except rear sight, cartouche is very dim but appears to be 1897.rifle was passed to me from grand father who served in the 4th Virginia Inf. during the Spanish American war,he was a Capt. in the horse drawn artillery I also have his saddle holster.
He was an avid shooter and hunter and may have changed the sight for a newer version.I am looking for the correct sight with the "C" markings

Why would you want to change such brilliant history? Rather document what you have there for posterity to admire and value.

A64, a number of Kragicon carbines were modified, perhaps in the field, for use by engineers and artillerymen. I had an 1895-marked carbine that had lost its lanyard ring and picked up sling swivels and a 1901 sight. I thought for some time that it was a butchered long rifle, then realized it was in the slot for carbine S/N, had carbine wood and a carbine barrel.

Unless you were in a cavalry unit that was expected to execute charges in combat, the lanyard ring is kind of a nuisance.

In any case I would keep your carbine as is, because it is trying to tell you a story.

By the way, the Krag carbine is a fine shooter and an excellent hunting rifle.

thanks was unaware of the mods for engineers and artillerymen, grand father was a competition shooter and had many medals for marksmanship.I have often fired the Kragicon at the range it is a superb shooter at mid distances up to 500yds with open iron sights.
