No. 4 serial number help
Hello, was wondering if anyone can date my No. 4. It appears to be a Mk 1 possible 1944 but the coat of Suncorite makes reading difficult. Serial number is PA25529. Thanks, Peter

Post additional pictures of the receiver sidewall. I suspect a FAZ.

Hi, unfortunately the receiver sidewall has a coating of Suncorite- it seems to read" No4Mk1ROF ? " and below " 8(?)/44 ". The vibrapen inscribing is light and to see more I'd have to remove the coating. Thanks, Peter

It would only be ROF(F) or ROFM does it look like either of those ?
If you can get a look at the draws, Fazakerley were the only manufacturer not to make both sides of the draws the same size. (one side is much wider than the other) so an instant giveaway for a faz No4.
Apologies to the owner of this picture, I did not keep a record of whose it was when I took a copy. (It may have been Roger Payne
?)
The Faz is the one on the right.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

It was. Peter pointed out this little feature to me more years ago than I care to remember....!
It's a Faz made in August 1944. I presume the markings are on the receiver side wall below the rear sight bed (& just in front of the safety lever)?
Very early Faz rifles (1941/42ish) were stamped untidily on the butt socket like BSA Shirleys. Then they moved mid war to very shallow electric pencilling on the flat under the sight bed, & later still, certainly as typically found on post WW2 stuff, they moved the markings to further forward on the side wall, in the area between the ejector screw & the back of the receiver ring.

Ok, took off the forearm wood and the result is in the picture. Appears to be a Faz. Having never seen a Maltby apart I would never have noticed, thanks.

Looking up my father's WW 2 Canadian Army pay book, he became a WO 2 in August 1944. How's that for a match. Thanks, Peter
