    Happy Father's Day!!!

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there.

I heard a fascinating term today from Bill Bennett that is so apropos: "Systemic Fatherlessness." We are witnessing a epidemic of "Systematic Fatherlessness" in the Western world, and the results are devastating. I was absolutely shaped by my father, by his quiet masculinity, by his intelligence, by his industry, by his humor, by his respect and love for my mother, and by his quiet, persistent love for me.

    Happy Father's Day!

    Bob

Leading up to Christmas my dad used to load up a bunch of Speer training bullets (plastic rounds powered by nothing but a primer). On Christmas day he'd put up a box filled with newspaper shreds with a target on it in the living room (!) and turn us loose with his first year Ruger Super Blackhawk* (.44 Magnum) to plink away the afternoon. Magic.

    * My wry father named the Blackhawk "Sweet Lips" in a comedic translation of "Sweete bryd" from Chaucer's "Tale of the Miller's Wife," one of The Canterbury Tales. It was inspired by his response to the deep bark of the pistol the first time he shot it. It took me years to pry an explanation out of him.

    Read the tale.
