    Mark of Mystery #2

This interesting mark first showed up on a Mk IV oiler. Lacking any other information, we classified the mark/maker as an Unknown Soldier.

(Scroll down the list to see the details.)

I was quite surprised when an Australianicon correspondent reported that the same mark appeared on the underside of a barrel on a 1943 BSA SMLE Mk III*.

Any information you might have would be appreciated. Extra marks if you can point to a book, website or other documentary source of information.

I think the response you got on another forum may be the nearest :

It shows those items were owned by the Cookie Monster.
Ref: Sesame Street, season 5, episode 4.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Thank you for your notes and suggestions. The "Cookie Monster" is my favorite theory/answer (so far); although I rather like suggestion that mark was of an the Australianicon Echidna.

    https://www.australiangeographic.com...06/echidna.jpg

As the marking shows up on the underside of the barrel (as well as on an oiler), this would suggest to me a manufacturer/supplier/repair depot marking, rather than some type of national marking.

So far I have reports that the mark has been found on Enfields in both Canadaicon and Australia.

Thank you, RobbD, for the Australian star pictures, as well.
