The Battle of Attu which took place on 11–30 May 1943, was a battle fought between forces of the United Statesicon, aided by Canadianicon reconnaissance and fighter-bomber support, and Japan on Attu Island off the coast of the Territory of Alaska as part of the Aleutian Islands Campaign during the American Theater and the Pacific Theater. In contrast with the tropical climate in the Pacific, Attu is the only land battle in which Japaneseicon and American forces fought in snowy conditions.

The more than two-week battle ended when most of the Japanese defenders were killed in brutal hand-to-hand combat after a final banzai charge broke through American lines.

off topic but interesting aspect of the battle for Attu

"The Storm On Our Shores", ATRIA Books, copyright Mark Obmascik 2019.

Story about two soldiers, an American sergeant and a Japaneseicon surgeon on Attu. The surgeon was Paul Nobuo Tatsuguchi. Sad and fascinating book.

    Hi Bear,
I read the book. Very interesting story. I found the focus on the consequences of war, even decades after its end, really moving.
Also the description of the lives of two such different people, of their origins, upbringing, fate...
What happened to them and/or (in Paul Nobuo's case) families.
    Not your usual war book.
Thanks for letting me know it.

I'm reading "Russiaicon's Last Gasp" from Prit Buttar now.
    A tad heavy...
