Question Help Needed - WW2 Russian Ammo Tin?

    Hi guys,

I'd appreciate any info./help that can be given in confirming the identity & age of an ammo tin that I recently acquired. I believe it's Russianicon in origin but from what I've seen of similar items, most tend to have the Russian/Soviet star on the side of them.

It's in "used" condition, looking like it's seen some service/action! I cleaned it up a bit & while doing so came across a few marks/markings on the lid. There is an '18' scratched into it with what I'd describe as a horizontal, reverse 'L' underneath it. There is also a faint "V". However, when looking at it, I can't decide if it's a letter V or possibly the point of a star. If the lighting is right, there is what looks like part of another line running off at an angle which could be another point... maybe.

As mentioned, any info. would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

I don't think it's pre revolution because it has ribs on the sides. Not all of these cans have the Sovieticon star on the sides.

I don't think it is that old, had a lot of these brought back from Iraq in 1991, as well as at the foreign arms room in APG, MD, and were scrapped. Not nearly waterproof, few if any markings or were rubberstamped markings.

Agreed, these things are still in use and lots came back from Bosnia/Yugoicon, Iraq and Afghanistan. Market's flooded with them and they all look like this...

The later version is made of aluminium, not "nominally Maxim" but pretty much the same thing.
