Eureka landing craft #5 from USS Harry Lee. Probably during the North Africa campaign.

It's got to be a calm landing zone. I don't think the bow hook would expose himself so freely in a free-fire zone.

I went out researching on these last two pics and found that on Wikipedia, this picture is presented as an LCPL built by Higgins, discharging reinforcements on Guadalcanal. More HERE. Isn't research fun?

The first marine of the landing craft looks like he is holding a Gas Trap Rifle based on the long shine of the gas cylinder along the barrel - what do you think?

    From usmcweaponry.com/wwii-korean-era/

There is a photo of a sister LCPL P10-2

"The Marines of the 3rd Defense Battalion land on August 7th, 1942 on Guadalcanal. These men would be the first Marines to be substantially equipped with the new rifle in a ground combat environment." See above link

gas traps and gas port M1 rifles Quiz

You have to look really close at this photo as both gas trap (both types of cylinders) and early gas ports are all mixed together, all have no trap stocks

Quiz: how many gas trap M1icon rifles in photo ?Attachment 120211
