Secretary of the Navy Award M1 Garand

Ive owned, traded, and sold quite a few MilSurps over the past 40 years and Ive kept about 20 of the most "collectable" Mausers, Finn Mosins, and USGI WW1 & WW2 rifles, but this is the ONLY Garand Ive ever owned, and probably will be the only one...

I was awarded this Secretary of the Navy Award M1icon Garand for being the high New Competitive Shooter who placed in the Medal bracket at the 1990 USMC Eastern Division Match. Ironically I was the High New Pistol shooter and this was the Award I received :-)

Its a NATO 7.62 converted M1 Garand that the USMC Shooting Team acquired in the early 1980's to give as Awards to their highest scoring new TYRO shooters at their Division Matches. Regretfully the program was ended in 2012 and the USMC Shooting Team returned their remaining M1's to MCB Albany for disposition.

I was a Summer Shooter on the 1990 USMC Pistol Team and I had one of the Rifle Teams top Armorers accurize this amazing Garand. Glass Bedding, NM Sights, Competition trigger job, and several coats of True Oil. I even kept the USMC shooting teams issued USGI Leather Sling on it. After I got it back from the Armorer I put about 50 rounds through it at the 300 and 600 Yard lines and its an amazing Nail Driver! The chamber and bore are like a glass mirror...

It will be passed on the my Grandsons to stay in the Hammer USMC Family :-)
