    Top furniture

    Hi guys,

I have been a member here for many years. The scan of some Enfield stuff is from me. Just trying to lessen the blow for a stupid Garandicon question!

On my SA Garand the front furnature Is very loose. I need an extra turn on that part (I forget the name of the front gas tube holder thing). Is there a standard way to tighten this up? I can machine any part needed. Best wishes to all, Ian

The front hand guard should have a small amount of play. It is part of the design. A tight hand guard will loosen when the barrel heats up while firing. Bullet point of impact will change as the barrel lengthens slightly from the heat and affect accuracy.

That's right. On a grunt rifle if the upper handguard is too tight it will crack from the parts tightening up. On match rifles they are epoxied to the band to keep them rigid and away from the barrel. Then there's a constant space between the gas cylinder and the front ferrule. Your gas cylinder lock should come down only snug on the six o'clock position to be tight. A wrench is the wrong way to go about it. Too tight is too tight. It's rotation of the gas cylinder that effects accuracy more than anything. That's another lesson...
    Regards, Jim

    Handguard

Yep, shoots better with a tight guard... indicates the difference between a target rifle and a battle rifle. In a firefight they can get so hot they smoke, that expands the guard and alters the point of impact by bending the barrel. JCG knew what he was about.
