Question Why doesnt my M1917 Bayo fit on my M1917??

Why doesnt my M1917 Bayo fit on my M1917?? The bayo needs to drop another 1/4" (6mm) but the slot bottom has hit the lug The crown and sight key groove do not seem to be altered so it doesnt look like anyone shortened the barrel.

Ive tried my other M1917 and my Brittish Enfield bayo and neither fit as well.

Very odd, the bayonet is up against the band??
So does the end of the stock still have the E, W, or R stamped mark on the wood? Is the spacing correct for the barrel manufacturer stamping ?

Maybe 1/8 inch cut for recrown???
On mine the distance between the band edge/wood end with cartouche W, and the back edge of the sight ring is 2 3/8 inch exact. There is approximately 3/8 inch to the front of the barrel extending past the sight ring to the muzzle.

Spacing is standard for the markings and also for the front sight key groove (ends of groove are visible on either side of the sight). There are no markings that I can see on the stock, which is nearly pristine, unlike most of the 1903 stocks Ive seen). Interesting idea though...a P-14 or incorrect aftermarket stock? Ill have to pull out my P14 and compare. Wish I had another M1917 to compare. Thanks for the reply! :-)

I thought about that, but it would be more like 1/4" or slightly more removed to fix a REALLY bad crown or end of muzzle!
Does anyone know the standard distance of the end of barrel from the end of front sight on an M1917?

EXCELLENT info! And there we find the problem. The distance between the end of the stock and the front sight is 2 1/8". I also now notice a slight wear mark on the barrel where the bayo band was when the rifle had a proper stock.
So now I need to verify whether this is a P-14 stock or a BAD replacement M1917 stock (time to measure my P14 stock)! And then...!!!!

Just to be clear my measurements were taken as shown by the red arrows. Taken to & from the sight ring base , not the sight.

Also I got out the eddy, my Eddystone comes up with the same measurements.

I have a few P14s, if you need measurements off a Britishicon .303 P14 let me know. Both of mine under gone the Weedon repair. I would have to look to see if one is in a 1917 replacement stock or original P14 stock. I am not sure if it would make a difference because the P14 British bayonet fits both.

a quote "The Weedon Repair Standard involved removal of the volley sights and (I think) bringing all guns up to the Mk1* standard. IIRC, this involved a new magazine, mag follower, extractor and maybe even some machining on non-Mk1* standard Winchester built guns.

It is believed by some that the Weedon depot fitted M1917 stocks to P14s if the original wood was beyond repair. Many P14s live in 1917 wood so it seems unlikely that the importers were responsible for all of them. Whether the M1917 style wood was supplied from the US, made at Weedon or taken from the M1917 rifles shipped to the UK under Lend-Lease is anybody's guess."

What about if the barrel was turned back one complete turn or in this case more like TWO complete turns. That would make up the distance and not change the front sight or markings. Have a look at the back end inside the wood...
    Regards, Jim

I had to think about that one for a few, but I get what you mean. So far it appears the stock is an aftermarket stock, or just too long...but Ive yet to remove the stock to look at each part and how the barrel lies in the inlay. According to Harrison the STANDARD MODEL length is 46.3". My rifle is 45 5/8" long, so I wonder what other lengths are correct other than the "Standard"!?!?

The butt plate has not been altered so the butt has not been shortened. AND THERE'S MORE! The handguard ring does not butt up against the receiver the way it does on my P-14 it almost looks like it is forward about 3/8" and held in place be the stock inletting, but again, I need to take this thing apart. However, if the stock is indeed 3/8" too long at the barrel end, that is exactly how much space there is for the bayo muzzle loop to slide down to the front sight. If its the stock, I can get another or try to fix this one. If the barrel has been turned and re-chambered...ugh!

If you can, please tell me the overall length of your M1917 and the length between each end of the stock. My M1917 is 45 7/8" long and the stock length is 42 3/8". The bayo needs another 3/8" to seat to the front sight. Ill bet the correct stock length is 42"!

So the wood stock length with a butt plate and front barrel band on the rifle. I laid a tape from the top of the butt plate straight down the stock till I got to the end with the W cartouche. I did not measure from the heal or the middle of the butt. I placed the end of the tape at the top of the butt plate and then went straight along the stock and under the bolt handle to the front end of the wood. The tape laid out nice and straight. This measurement of the stock on the rifle is 42 3/4 inches.
The total length of the M1917 rifle from the same spot on the butt plate & under the bolt handle so the tape is flat and laid out to the end of the barrel is 46 3/8 of an inch. See photo
    does that help
