    US Military Axe?

Last night I dreamed that I restored my father's old axe. I dreamt that I wanted to keep the old axe handle so I put it in a planer and took off a quarter inch off each side and then bonded three eights strips of Mohongany to the handle and work the axe handle down to the original shape.

So this morning I went and dug out my dad's axe just to look at it. That was when I noticed that it had the US and two numbers, one of the numbers is a 2 but not sure what the other is, maybe a 9. Anyhow, if this is a US Military Axe It would not surprise me at all since my Dad was in for over 30 years. Korea, Vietnam, and the cold war years.

Has anyone seen one of these and have any information on it?

    Thanks,
    Bill

US 52? The smaller axes are more common to find. I've seen them marked 1918. These are around too and marked by the makers of the other famous steel tools like the Bolo and Manchettes we collect. If you search "US military full size axe" you'll come across them.

Yes, it's a "9" not a "5". I know when it came to our issue axes they were strictly off the shelf items and painted to whatever color the unit desired...until we stopped that and just issued them in original dress. Usually just the cheapest off the shelf local purchase.

Yes, I actually never thought of that, I guess they could have easily been military axes too. A great axe is a great axe!

Thank you, I wonder what the "92" means, I'm pretty sure it's not the year because I remember him using this in the 80's, I think it's the same Axe anyhow...

Doesn't seem like anything points to this axe being military. So I wonder if I should restore it as I did in my dream no clue why this axe popped into my dreams, I have not even looked at it in years.

It needs a new handle at least Bill, and no guntape to hold it together.

You got that right, the wee bee wobblies of the head is a might sketchy. I'll bead blast the head and give it a nice parkerized finish next time I'm parking a rifle. It's my Dads so I'm sure one of my kids will want it eventually so it would be nice to fix it up.
