I just watched a video on youtube "M1917 from forge to finish". youtube.com/watch?v=39wM-lzDWE4. Has anyone else seen it or am I just late to the party on this one? And what is "Slushing" the rifles?

Great short film. I believe the film was made at the same time in April 1918 at the Eddystone Rifle Plant as the National Archive has US Army Signal Corp photos showing the same individuals as in the film. The one point of interest that I noted in the film is the process for clocking the barrels into the receivers by hand wrench and vise. There was speculation that the crack Eddystone receivers were from he use of hydraulic presses used in the construction of the rifles. Obviously that is not the case at Eddystone itself. The problem looks to be elsewhere in the life of the receiver and rifle.

When I first saw this video I thought it was Eddystone for two different reasons than yours - the stock cut for the bolt handle and the black workers.

On Youtube the poster of the video states in the comments section that the plant is Winchester, however.

Well, I do not know where he got Winchester but I have attached a Signal Corp photo of the "slushing" job at Eddystone. You will note the same people on the left side of the slushing tank. It appears that several of the military ordnance officers wants to get into the photo and not to get their hands dirty. Enjoy.

The poster gave no source, as such it is possible it is 100% Eddystone or an amalgamation of production at Eddystone, and Winchester. Heck, maybe even Remington is in there.
