They have to be cast in 2 piece moulds otherwise there would be no means of extracting the cast handle from the mould once the cast alloy handle had cooled down. Unlike "sand casting" where the mould is used only once and then "broken away" from the object that has been cast, in "die-casting" the mould is reused multiple times.

There is nothing wrong with the quality of the handle casting seen in the pics because casting is not a precision process. If precision is required for a cast part then it is machined or if the finish is important then finishing processes are carried out, such as, grinding, sanding and polishing.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Having collected these, very specifically, for 35 years I would buy that knife right there for $135.
That's a WW2 manufactured 3rd Pattern FS Fighting Knife (late war hence the moulds not lining up as the moulds wore out) all day long.
I can't speak for Ron Flook but he's a close collecting friend of 35 years and I'd bet my 1st Pattern FS's he'd agree with me.
    Hope that helps.

    Like these...
Wolverhampton Die Casting Ltd to the mould-number ‘4’, but not necessarily making the knife which is likley Nowill or Rogers but unlikely Wilkinson.

My very good friend and ex-Pat Roy Shadbolt has some wonderful online articles dedicated to FS's.
    His website here:

Go to the articles section and you may find the treasure you are seeking.....
