difference between 44 S&W American and 44 Colt cartridges

My friend in California told me these two cartridges were almost the same ! I told that is not correct as the S&W top break revolvers required a large diameter rim for extraction while the Colt 44 cal being used in conversions only required a thin rim as the ejector rod would poke them out of the cylinder

    photos: left 44 S&W American, 44 S&W Russianicon, 45 S&W and 44 Colt

have corrected Jan 6th the listing of cartridges

I think in your standing photo, .45 Schofield and .44 Colt are mixed up.

In that photo, .44 Colt is far right.

My understanding is that "Modern" cowboy action .44 Colt is apparently, .44 Russianicon brass headstamped as .44 Colt.

I believe that .41 Magnum brass is used to form "real" .44 Colt for those that shoot original guns.

you are correct, the photo showing the headstamps has the old/original 44 Colt third in line (note the headstamp and primer) while the profile has the 44 Colt far right

I have corrected my original posting
