    GEW88 Barrel

I found a Kar98a at the Phoenix SAR show. Out of China(?) and bore trashed(!). Now I have several GEW88 barreled receivers with perhaps 1-2 nice barrels. Will the Gew88 barrel fit on the Kar98a receiver? Is this a good idea? Anybody out there have any experience with such an idea? Thanks guys.

Steve, The Kar98a should be a small ring large thread receiver (1.1 dia thread). The Gew 88 barrel has the small thread. (.980 dia.) So it really won't work. (I don't now if you could machine the tenon off and start over with threading??) Going The other way --from large threads to small threads is doable. I rethreaded a 7mm k98 barrel to Gew 88 dimensions for a Gew 88 action that I think I got from You!! It worked great. Also with the Gew 88 barrel is the small bore (.318 I believe) You don't want to contend with that. My 8mm reamer pilot wouldn't even fit in the bore. Best to look around for a 98 barrel. Salt Flat

OK guys FYI time. The Gew88 is a small ring gun, so the barrel on the Gew88 is a small ring barrel. That barrel will indeed fit a small ring Kar98a. But, hold on as the Gew88 barrel is a straight steel tube, NO SHOULDER. So, it will fit but not be correct. Not sure if I swap out the WWI barrel or leave it alone. It is in poor condition but a keeper. I will keep you guys informed. Thanks, Saltflat.

Steve, The Hoosier gun Works site has an excellent reference page on all the 98 Mauser barrel thread sizes. For what ever it is worth here is the link:

    Kar98a Wood

    Guys:
I have a small project with a new find, a Kar98a. Out of China and a beater. Phoenix SAR Gunshow find. I need a decent cut-down stock. The odds of finding a full stock are not good, so a cut-down works. Can anyone help me? Thanks, guys.
