I'm assembling a '39 BSA No1 Mk3 from a box of crusty parts. I'm nearly done but need the two screws that attach the upper handguard metal nose to the guard itself. Does anyone know what size these wee screws are?

Check BRP Corp or Apex. I am out of town for a few weeks otherwise I’d put some in the mail for you. I have a bunch of ratty hand guards with the hardware still installed.
Item 20 on this drawing - no size given just part number BB0727 (that may help if you need to order them).
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...
I've checked both places and more with no joy. I couldn't even find a complete upper handguard. The one with the parts was cut at the rear so I got a repro out of Canada and fit it. If I knew the thread size/pitch I'd make my own if they're not a standard size. They may be a Whitworth size.

It won't be correct - but neither will the rest of the rifle - why not just find two small slotted 'black' wood screws and use those ?

They're actually a machine screw and the steel cap is threaded. Making parts is half the fun! A quick and dirty solution would be to epoxy the cap to the handguard and fill the screw holes but I won't do that either.
