Although post WW2 by a large margin, being introduced in 1959 almost makes the MP5 sub-machine gun an antique in its own right. It certainly qualifies for the status of an 'Iconic' firearm in my view.
Here are some images I derived from my 3D CAD model that some of you might find interesting:

I have an MP5A3 made under licence by POF in Pakistan. I have found it to be be much more reliable than the genuine H&K product. H&K tend to make the parts for their various firearms too hard and thus slightly brittle, causing frequent parts breakages (throughout all their various models). The POF product is of good quality but seems to have tougher heat treating giving nil breakages. The H&K MP5 was used by our SAS and I have personally seen and handled a large pile of broken MP5's just from training.

Thank you for your compliment AND the correction!
Of course I should have thoroughly checked that 'date of birth' beforehand.
The earliest date that I could find just now on one of the documents that I used to build that model is 04.03.68, and it replaces one from 20.01.66.
There could well be earlier ones, but the dimension tolerances definition they refer to was from april 1960, so it is most unlikely that it predates that.
Sorry 'bout that.

I also must confess I allowed myself to give it a (documented) non-standard sling loop, for a bit of individuality.
Also, who would put a scope on a submachine gun?
But I had already modeled a Hensoldt with its HK mount, it fitted perfectly on the MP5, so why not?

By the way, I have also modeled the mechanism of a special HK suitcase built to hold an MP5K.
It was used by government bodyguards for the protection of VIP's, so it is not of (strictly) military origin.
Would it still be of interest to members of this forum, or is such a thing too far off topic?

I would certainly be interested to learn what parts exactly failed in those MP5's. Did they all suffer the same defects?

Damaged barrel trunnions, cracked rollers, fractured bolt heads, broken extractors, broken ejectors, broken pins (common to most H&K forearms), etc. The 770 rifles and .22 rimfire semi-auto rifles suffered cracked receiver covers, broken cocking arms, cracked components. Similar problems with G3's. Although H&K products are nicely finished, it is my opinion that the only thing they mastered was marketing!

Thanks for the info Woodsy, as a mechanical engineer I love to chew on information like that : )
My only personal, long time experience with H&K is with a P9s, and to a larger extend, a P7M13.
I had nothing to complain about with those, nothing at all!
Sold my SIG P210-6 so I could afford to buy that P7, and NEVER regretted it one bit.
But that is by no means comparable, I am fully aware of that : )

I've only owned the one example, a rather unusual sympathetically deactivated 1968 made piece with no serial number, not removed, just never there.

Interesting example and one that HK couldn't quantity as they insisted they never produced a firearm without a serial number, they stopped responding when I sent the pictures! Read into that what you will....

My only other MP5 related encounters was a Passat GL5 fast back I worked on while working for VAG in the late 1980's, repaired bullet holes in it, armour plate in the doors and genuine VW MP5 door pockets!

It had clearly been a 'hire car' in Northern Ireland at some point!

Final one was an Egyptian tourist police escort who insisted on walking round with my tour group with his MP5 set to rock and roll and his finger on the trigger ... After giving up trying to tell him to get his sh*it together, I gave up and made bloody sure he was in front of me at all times!

The MP5 is my favorite sub machine gun. It is easy to shoot, has minimal recoil and flash, and is reasonably inexpensive to shoot. I have had mine since 1987. It is legally registered and fully transferrable.





At times, I have it configured with Swiss style lower and Swiss flash hider.















When I'm in the mood, I configure my MP5 with wood for that classis look.







Even Dolf Goldsmith enjoys shooting it.





I have an HK .22lr conversion kit for it.


(The small barrel in the lower right is for my MP5SD)

I also have a Fleming MP5 .22lr conversion kit.
