The US started testing muti round ball loads with the black powder 45 Govt revolver in the late 1870's but nothing became an issued item. The 45-70
was also loaded with three (or four) round lead balls Remington still loaded these round ball loads during WW1 and they were used on guard duty
in remote areas with the old 1884 Springfield. I have a 30-40 Kragicon with a muti ball load too. These have been around since the black powder days

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. They used a solid Ball load and a Buck and Ball loading in .69 cal muskets in the Civil War. You do realize small children loaded almost all of the ammunition used in the Civil War. Child labor was a big deal in the 19th Century.
