USMC WWII Reversible Poncho and M1 Pouches

I was inspired to find one of these after reading Jeff Shaara's book on Okinawa and the recent book on Marine equipment I picked up.

Not sure if it really is but it seems like a really iconic piece of Marine Pacific War equipment.

I am reluctant to open it all the way up but not because it's brittle or anything, it's in really nice condition and is very soft and flexible. It has been stored very well.

This is the odd part, it came from Greece. Apparently we must have given them a ton of our excess stuff after WWII and a lot of it has sat in warehouses this entire time. There are several sellers on eBay selling these at prices much less than their American counterparts are offering them at.

Anyway, I took a chance, and I'm very pleased. Guy even threw in two M1icon Carbine pouches for free, 1945 and 1957, and I got it in a week.

The white stuff is talc and original to the poncho. If I wash it, it will come right off. So it isn't faded, it's a storage thing I guess. There is some staining which all appears to be from the snaps lying on the fabric but the snaps aren't rusted at all so not sure what caused it.

A Greek dealer once told me that the Greek army used a lot of Britishicon and American equipment post WW2. They may have used more British kit initially after WW2 and then switched to using more US kit but quite a bit of equipment was sent there and there is probably still some there.

That would make sense as there's a Greek dealer selling US rifles a part at a time for some years now. This is another example of that.

US sellers are asking $200 and up for these. The Greeks are selling them for less than $100 in several different grades. Shipping is high at $35 but still a bargain compared to guys here. $59 for used ones with patches and they go up from there. I splurged and got top of the line. They describe them pretty well, being soft or not, dates or not. Not all have markings, but most do. Several different manufacturers.

Original helmet covers are bringing several hundred dollars. I don't know anything about them. Whether yours is wartime or not. I'm sure it's original but being WWII related is how it brings the big bucks. I'm probably going to get a $20 repro to put on a Vietnam era helmet for my display I do have one WWII helmet but I'll put that with my European display.

You know that's not really high. To mail a box holding something as small as an M1icon carbine magazine that doesn't go through the template slot in Canadaicon Post will cost me about $25 to ship two thousand miles. Further distance will cost another ten on top of that...

I found a site on the helmet covers. Your contract is from 1968. Vietnam era, not WWII. Earlier Vietnam era 1961 contract has 5 bidders up to $50 at present with a day and a half to go on ebay. Only one other original on there is from 74 but it has big numbers on it for training purposes and has no takers at $40 buy it now.

Usually Parachute school I think. The instructors could watch you with binoculars and give instructions from the ground over loudhailer.

I bought a new helmet cover several years ago on eBay from Ray's Surplus for $8.00 - thought it was like the one my older brothers (both in their 80's now) had in Vietnam. There must not be anything special about it though, since I've had it on my table at about every gun show I've attended since. I'll see if I can get the numbers off of it or a picture. Seems like it may have a 70's or 80's date on it. That AVERY mag pocket looks like it was made with an extra piece stitched into the flap. Jim Flavin posted pics of some of the variations over on the Carbine forum several years ago. Hey, tomorrow is JUNE 6th !! - Bob

I pulled out the helmet cover I mentioned and took some pics. I believe it's "Woodland Camo" since it matches some fatigues my oldest brother gave me - have pictures of those somewhere, too. Now, I'm not sure if this thing is genuine or a knockoff of some type? The only number I can make out that might be a date is the 09. Does that mean 2009? - Bob
