Aug 44 may be a bit early as MWO-W3 (adjustable rear sight) wasn't adopted until 11 Sept 43. The majority of the reports from various Army Units that are mentioned in the CCNL's state that field installation of the adj. rear sights started in early 1945. Unfortunately, there is no mention of when any Marine Corps Units started making the switch. My bet would be that the above picture is from 1945 sometime before Okinawa.

My guess based on what can be seen in photo as well. A 5mil serial Winchester during transition to adjustable sight was my thought, along with what appears to be T-5 slide. Though I am not a very good student of Winchesters.
If it were an IBM, could be earlier since they started using both stamped and milled adjustable sights in spring 44 production before their contract ended. Of course who knows if any of those made it to theater.
You can see adjustable sights in use during the Ruhr Pocket Campaign of the ETO in April 45 if you dig around; Signal Corp videos and photos.

Moving out after cleaning a town during Ruhr Pocket Campaign.
I must have paused that particular Signal Corp video a dozen times to get that shot. Wife probably thought I was nuts. Me: "Did you see that...Did you see that??" Rewind/Pause... "See right there!" LOL

IIRC was a unit of 9th Army.

I think the type 1 band doesn't fit this scenario though. AFAIK by the time Winchester transitioned to adjustable sights the type 2 band was in use.

Yes agreed; my only additional thought regarding the narrow band was, use up what's in the parts bin. Of course the obvious would be the adjustable sight, was field installed, which I suppose is what Wayne was getting at on probability of photo time frame.

A few years back Marty Black had a Winchester within a couple hundred of my 5.6. He wanted a part by part comparison. It was a good example of use what's in the bin. I had type 3 sight, oil hole trigger, type 2 band. Marty's had flip sight and not a lot else the same. I'm almost sure it had the type 2 band. It was a very nice original gun.

I still have pics of a 5.41M Inland I sold with a Type 3 rear sight and Type 5 slide. The barrel date was 8-44, so possibly shipped in September? I don't know how likely a Type 1 band would have been in that range, though. - Bob

Yeah, the Type-1 narrow bands still on hand, were probably in the bottom of the parts bin by that time frame.

The type 1 band is possible as it was in use to about the 5.5 serial number range with Winchester. The type 5 slide was also started in the 5.5 range and the type 2 or type 3 rear sight were in the 5.7 range or take a few hundred thousand. (lol)
