    WWI Russian Mess Tin

This one was a challenge to find. They don't come up often and when they do they tend to be crushed or filled with holes. This one has plenty of dents and a been there done that look but the markings are clear and present, and it has no holes. Dated 1915.

It is on the large size as food containers go but no lid or handle although it has an attachment for one most likely to extend it over a fire. A lot of soot type material on the outside. If filled with stew or something similar it would make a nice meal with a couple of chunks of bread. Copper with lead solder repairs. If a lead bullet doesn't get you your mess tin will.

I have never had borscht. Now I'm curious. I love soups.

Was a time I used to buy it by the quart from a Sovieticon emigre. Great stuff, the way he made it. As such things do, eventually it became a shadow of the original. I suppose he farmed out the cooking to family member, or some such. Haven't run into it's equal since.

Russians marching to the front lines 1914

Here is a photo to go with your mess tin, it shows some Russianicon soldiers resting while on their way to the front lines in 1914.

Note the early sling attachment on the Mosin Nagant rifle

This is an earlier model of mess tin with re-enactors. Interesting how they carried them.
