A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Pretty cool to see a rifle sporting the second variant of the Romanian mounts. Unfortunately I dont think it'd be feasible to repro a mounts for this setup. The front mount has an angled post that tips and fits into the base and seems like it would be a real pain to make without an original set and that isnt happening obviously.

The repro mounts on eBay for the other variant are actually quite good. Also, there are enough differences to distinguish them from an original.

Actually I think these rings are easier to produce than the bracket type mount, but of course less market for them for being rarer. Still does not solve the problem of the non-available IOR scopes that were used with those.

The scopes seem to be unicorns. They are out there but no one lets them go. Could possibly be one of the most difficult “wartime” scopes to acquire for what seems to be a easy rifle to acquire. The VZ24 snipers seem to pop up about 1/2 dozen times per year. Maybe more. I’ve seen two scopes by themselves sold in 10 years. Missed it by just that much. Last year there was an auction and I think 7-8 entire weapons system (first and second variants) sold. Someone had cornered the market.
