Model 1935 Peruvian Mauser Bolt Question

    Hi there-

I recently acquired (most of) what appears to be a FN Model 1935 Peruvianicon Mauser. This one looks like it was converted to .30-06 and has the factory ".30" stamp on the rear of the receiver. At some point in it's life, it was further sporterized with a cut-down stock and has a "Mark II" replacement safety. It was also drilled/tapped for a scope.

Right now, the bolt is the greatest area of concern for me. It is missing the extractor and extractor ring. It is also missing a small protrusion on bolt face. I don't know my Mauser bolt nomenclature very well, but after searching it appears as though this may be called a feeding detent, while the corresponding protrusion above it is called a rim support. I've attached a picture to show the area that I'm talking about.

The feeding detent appears to either have been broken off of this bolt or possibly filed down. I have no idea about the history of the gun (a basement find, so who knows). My questions boil down to these:

    1. Has anyone ever seen this "modification" before, or is it most likely damaged?
    2. Does anyone know if this affects the function and safety of the bolt?
3, It appears that the extractor/extractor ring for this bolt are interchangeable with M98 bolts, but that's just based on my observation and comparison with other complete Mauser bolts that I have. Can anyone confirm/deny that?

I appreciate any help, observations or comments that anyone cares to offer.

    Good luck and take care.

This is the pictures that I found online showing the different parts of the bolt face. The portion I am missing is the feeding detent.

That is damage, not a modification. You can tell by the way the metal looks grainy and the cut isn't clean. Personally I would not use that bolt, no idea of the actual safety of it just that I don't trust metal which has had a break like that before with 50k PSI by my face.

Could have simply been dropped and broken off, could have been something else.

Yes eaglelord is right don't trust that bolt have it replaced. If it broke on its own then you have a serious casting defect and there will be other weak spots throughout. If it was dropped and damaged that way then you would have to be concerned of unseen cracking in an area of the bolt that takes all the pressure of each shot. A gunsmith can weld on and shape that but a replacement really would be cheaper.

    Hi there-

Thanks for the advice - that was along the lines of what I was thinking as well. I looked at all of my other mausers and none of them are missing that portion. I do appreciate the confirmation.

It looks like parts for Peruvianicon mausers are only available on the second Tuesday of each week, so it might be a while before I'm able to turn up another Peruvian bolt. If anybody has any leads on one, I'd love to know about it. I've checked the normal places like Numrich, Sarco and Hoosier Gun Works among others, but I'd welcome any other suggestions.

Thanks again for the help and take care.

98 bolts are on Ebay everyday. Buy a new bolt and do NOT have a gunsmith weld up that old bolt. That old bolt was brittle and broke after falling on the floor. I would not trust my eyes with that bad bolt.

Yeah, I was planning on picking up a "cheap" (obviously, that's a relative term) 98 bolt so that I can get it functional, then keep an eye out just in a case a genuine Peruvianicon on ever shows up. I know that any collector value has been removed due to the previous mods, so it's more about getting it to shooting condition than anything else.

    Thanks for the help.

    Good luck and take care.

Will a standard K98icon bolt work in one? These have a reputation for being the smoothest action of all 98 Mausers. What exactly makes the difference? I would assume the bolt plays a large part in it, closer tolerances perhaps.

Get on Ebay right now. Swany99 has $60.00 98 bolts and they are nice. Move quick.
