    The raid on Dieppe.

The biggest combined operations raid on France has taken place in the Dieppe area, where Canadianicon, Britishicon Special Service troops, a detachment of a U.S. Ranger battalion, and a small contingent of Fighting Frenchicon troops took part. The force was carried and escorted by the Royal Navy air support and protection was provied
by the R.A.F. Scenes at Southern port when troops arrived back.

One of the American troops has a light for his cigarette on arrival back. It was the first time Americans troops had been in action in Europe this War.

    At New Haven

    Taken by Lt. Spender 19. 8. 42.

Interesting photo, I take it US army ranger wit Canadianicon troops. If I'm not mistaken the first US casualities of the war were at the failed Dieppe raid.

The losses are sad but the lessons learnt at Dieppe may well have saved lives on D Day.

No, those would be the casualties at Pearl Harbor and in the Pacific theatre. Those at Dieppe may have been the first in Europe, but not the first for the US.
