    Function problems

I have a WW 2 vintage Springfield that I got from the CMPicon a few years ago. I have usually fired it with my handloads (150 projectile over 46 grains of 4895)and it has functioned fine. However, the last couple of weekends I have shot it with some Lake City (LC 69) amo that I also got from the CMP and I have been havng problems.

First if I load a clip with the LC amo it will consistently double on me. I know that this can happen with a light trigger due to the recoil, but I was very conscience to firmly hold the trigger back and it still happens. Yet if the next clip is my hand loads it won't double.

Second, if I single load it using a SLED it will consistantly fail to extract and leave the spent case in the chamber. Again it does not do this with my hand loads.

If it was the other way around and it was not working with my handloads but was with the LC I could understand it. Bur not functioning with the LC has me confused. @ things that come to mind are that LC rounds are too hot, or hat the extractor spring might be week (the extractor looks fine)

    Any suggestions?

Be carefull. Not to be flippant-and i wish i could help more-but i wouldnt just keep pulling the trigger on live ammo in that rifle. PS--Did you check to see if the mainspring broke?

Have you inspected the hammer hooks and trigger? Have they been altered?

Is this the only Garandicon you have, if you have another you could swap out the trigger groups and test.

Remove the trigger group from your rifle.
With the hammer released (forward) pull the trigger back and hold it there.
With your other hand cock the hammer, then allow the trigger to release.

    Does the hammer follow?

Doubling can be caused by: Milking the trigger while firing from a bench, Firing pin issues, Soft primers
If you are not ejecting when single loading and ejecting fine when using a clip, you are probally "riding" the op rod handle home and the extractor is not grabbing the rim properly.
Both of your issues may be corrected with a good cleaning and re-lube.

To answer all of your questions. The mainspring is not broken, The trigger group was match conditioned by Fulton Armory and breaks at exactly 5 lbs. The hammer does not follow the bolt when the trigger is kept pulled. The failure to extract was with single load and when using a clip, and to be honest it did happen once in 10 rounds with my handloads too. When firing from the SLED I just pull the handle back and let it go. I am aware of the problem of milking the trigger so I made an effort to try and not do that, to no avail.

    Thanks

I have a Garand troubleshooting guide I received from a fellow named Jerry Kosik that's titled:

    M1icon Garand Stoppage/Malfunction, Cause, Action/Remedy – Based on US Army FM 23-5, TM 9-1005-222-35 & TM 9-1275

While not a tech manual it certainly gives you an idea of where to start looking for problems.

It's 63 Kb so if you want PM me and I'll email it to you.

Is the LC recoil more pronounced than with your handloads?

Have you tried any other ammo than these two types?

I didn't really notice any difference between them. I am a bit leary about most commercial .30-'06 loads since I don't think they are designed with the Garandicon in mind

Again, is this the only Garandicon you have?
Be useful to swap out the trigger group from a different source.

no, I have a bunch of them. I'll try swapping trigger groups and see what happens. That will have to wait for the weekend
