G&H mounts go way back to 1932 and are period correct for an owner who wanted up upgrade so he could see.
When it's not called a 1907 action, it's called a Scotch Deer Stalker. There was no such thing as a "Red Deer Stalker", and you're mistaken: the "Scotch Deer Stalker" refers only to this 1907 action, not to the "M-10" .280 built on the 1910 action.

Looks to be in very good condition.

Post some photos after you ruin it and waste your money so we can have a good laugh eh?

Barrel length does not the determine the model of rifle.

The rifle in your picture is a regular M-10 sporting rifle.
Ax303 is correct of course, and this is not a M1905 nor is it an M-10. It IS a Scotch Deerstalker (SDS)- sometimes referred to as the M1907. The SDS is the Model 1905 with an updated bolt - a multi-lug bolt head similar to the M-10. The SDS was only chambered in .280 Ross. The M1905 was never chambered in .280 Ross. The M1905 is clearly discernable by it two locking lug - vs. multi-lug bolt head found on the SDS.

SDS's are rarely encountered and are a prized collector find. This one has some negatives - particularly the rubber recoil pad and aftermarket sling swivels. I agree with the suggestion about utilizing a scope mount that does not involve drilling holes in the rifle. However, I wouldn't strenuously object to drilling the holes given the condition and modifications place it in the low-grade collector category. And in the final analysis, whoever owns it can do whatever they want to it.

I’m a HUGE fan of tastefully sporterized Springfield 1903s.
I have a few with scopes and they look pretty snazzy. Personally, I *prefer* the looks of an iron-sighted rifle.

However, when done tastefully and in a historically accurate way, I see no reason not to drill a couple holes in a rifle that’s already a sporter.

The original poster here isn’t talking about a picatinny rail and a red dot. He’s talking about a Griffin and Howe side mount. That’s perfect for this rifle!

I wholeheartedly believe the original owner of this rifle would be tickled with that modification.

Bonus points if it ends up with a vintage scope, too!

It's not a sporterized military rifle, it's a factory sporter.

Only one scope was more or less "factory": the Goerz Pernox.

goerz pernox rifle scopes - Google Search
The period scope and mount will probably cost more than the rifle.

This not some sporterized rifle. And a Griffin Howe mount is not period correct for this rifle.

This is a Ross Factory Sporter of which only a few hundred were made, 110+ years ago.

Very few remain. And even less in this condition.

Sell it to someone that will appreciate it.
