M1917 rifles with 8X Unertl scope in Service rifle SSR list

    G’day all,

I’ve seen on the Approved Sniper Rifle list for NRAA (National Rifle Association Australiaicon) service rifle and the SSAA combined services match, a reference to “M17 , Eddystone/Various makers, USAicon/ 8x USMC scope”

I can’t find any information around this combination, though I may be looking in the wrong places.

    Appreciate any assistance,
    Thanks
    Anthony

My guess is that this is just to put an otherwise period correct scope on an otherwise period correct US service rifle, though I've never seen one in that configuration. Makes me wonder if a specific mount is required to also be correct?

    Might be a good guess.
Though, I would have thought the Winchester A5 to be more period correct.

The Marines got rid of the M1917's by 1920. So there were never any USMC Unertl scopes on the M1917's.

Really there were not any A5's on the M1917's for the military either. I remember a couple for testing, but there were never more than a handful. The A5 scope was technically considered obsolete before the WWI even started. WRA was promising them a new Model of 1918 Scope based on a Germanicon Design for WWI, and used A5's as a temporary placeholder until those could be completed. The Model of 1918 scope just never made it in time past the testing phase to be used in the war.
