Mark, also forgot that the US issued Thompson Model 1928A1 almost always had the horizontal front grip and never the vertical grip.
That what caught my eye in the photo and then remembered the photo in the Thompson book
Maybe very early issue Thompsons with the vertical grip (Model 1921) were issued to USMC and pre WW2 army l

The '28 will be an earlier model, not an "A1. If pilfered from the USMC that went through Aussie in the beginning of the war, it could be an old holdover '21 but probably not. The front grip gave way to a forestock so a sling swivel could be easily added for carry. Almost mandatory for military...
