    L42A1 Rear Sight?

What is the meaning of the abbreviation CR 1250 on this rear sight?

In my opinion it is the rear sight for the L42A1, correct?

    Thank you.

The CR number was a number allocated to pieces of equipment/parts by the Ministry of Supply. You tend to see them on post-WW2 parts. The sight looks satisfactory to me. The cursor has been modified to account for the flatter shooting 7.62mm ballistics, & it bears a 'M' indicating that it is metricised. Being a Faz No4 rearsight originally it is highly unlikely to have been on a wartime 4T, but rather it is likely to be a post-war 4T replacement, or even a replacement from the L42 era. Having said that, they are easy enough to convert - I've done quite a few myself.

Re the rifle: I would examine it closely if considering purchase, bearing in mind the very high serial number for a Savage rifle that purports to have been a 4T conversion.

    Thank you Roger.

I saw this plate from the pamphlet "SAIS No. 18, 7.62 mm L42A1......." by Ian Skennertonicon

and there the leaf (scale) bears CR1487.

The metric conversion must have taken place after 1965. Correct?

Rifle: Is an Italianicon L.E. sniper. The rifle is correct, the rear sight is not correct for this rifle.

I'm afraid I don't have a list of the various CR numbers Giancarlo, & I cannot explain the discrepancy in the CR number on the sight leaf in your photo's. Maybe it is a number for the sight assembly in its earlier 303 guise? Or simply an error? Perhaps someone can offer some help here? I just had a look at a box of Faz & Poole rear sights & the leaves are marked CR403. The cursors are marked CR318. These are post WW2 mfr but still 303 era.

Yes, I would assume that 7.62mm sight conversions would most likely date from circa 1965 or after. Enfield 7.62mm mags are generally date stamped '65.

Items 25 to 32 are the components of the rear sight (According to the military L42 Parts List - I have posted a copy of it some years ago into the Milsurps library) Each component has a CR number and the complete rear sight is item No25

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Looks as though 'new' CR numbers were in the main allocated, most likely when the parts went from 303 No4 to 7.62mm L42A1. At least, both the cursor & leaf have different numbers.....

26C6735 does not appear in the list of L42A1 serial numbers that I have?

    Maybe others could check theirs?
