A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Tony Pucci wrote them up in the GCAicon Journal... they match the receiver heat lot. No idea why they did it, but it's uncommon.
Real men measure once and cut.

Years ago, Tony Pucci pointed out this oddity of the heat lot being also under the rear sight cover.

Since August 2012, I have seen and noted 11 such receivers.
One in June 1942, five in August 1942, four in September 1942, and one in October 1942.

So far, all the heat lot marks are read looking back from the front of the receiver not forward from the heel.
Some of the heat lots under the rear sight cover are complete, some are missing the first letter, and some are missing the last letter or number. Otherwise, they do match the receiver heat lot seen on the right side of the receiver above the drawing and revision number.

All are - 17 revision receivers. but the heat lots themselves are different.
During the - 14 revision the SA was dropped. During the 17 revision the - (dash) was dropped.

I have seen a few receivers with a partial or complete heat lot stamped on the rail for the op rod. One such receiver is 331965, September 1941. Maybe these receivers mistakenly had the heat lot stamped too high then reapplied in the correct place on the receiver.
Surely, the heat lots under the rear sight cover would not have been mistakenly placed there.
