THE WAR FORTNIGHTLY 25th April 1941

I thought that this image is quite interesting from the front page of a biweekly newspaper/magazine that I happen to have, dating to WW2. The caption explains the image.

Can anyone tell what make/type of bike it is from the little bit seen?

Norton supplied a lot of motorcycles to the Britishicon military in WWII. However, because of the steering damper knob and the speedometer shape and mount my best guess would be BSA M20. It had a 500cc long stroke side valve engine that produced good low end torque. Excellent machine, great picture.

I suppose the gun mount would have been practical if you were a former member of a motorcycle display/acrobatics team.

From the photo it looks like it may have been some sort of "special butt-less" version of the Thompson aimed and fired with the soldier's face.

Oh and look: Gen. Gough-Gough, the erstwhile GOC of the 5th Army of Kaiserschlact fame giving his considered opinions on battles!

Many an old sweat must have had a wry grin, or made some suitable expostulations at the thought of that!
