Going to Ride the (Colt) Pony Again!

My first AR-15 was an M16A1 in active Army from 1974 to 1977 (and 1977 to 1979 in the Reserves). My second and third ARs were USAF GAU-5/A/A (11.5" bbl) and GAU-5/P (14.5" bbl) in 1979 to 1981.

My first personally owned AR was an SP1 20" in 1982, which I traded for a Colt SP1 Carbine in 1987. I had that until I was forced out on disability in 2000.

Also, between 1988 and today, I have built dozens of the little erector set guns in all configurations on PWA, SGW, Palmetto, Essential Arms, DPMS, Eagle Arms, Sendra, Stag, Anderson, JD Machine, and Smith & Wesson lowers.

While I currently have several home built ARs on various lowers, I decided I wanted another "Real Colt" AR-15.

It started when I was arranging the purchase of a OEM1 stripped Colt 6920 M4 for a customer of the shop I worked at. The Appendix B prohibits Colt 6920 "Law Enforcement," but not "M4". While the customer got cold feet, I contacted Aaron at Ratworx, He switched the 6920 lower for a 6933 lower, marked only "Colt Carbine" (which is not on the banned list which lists only 6920). We have DROSed Colt Carbine marked 6933 lowers at the shop before with no problems. He is shipping me the upper, so the receiver only is going top the shop.

While the originaL customer got squeamish and backed out, I decided to go ahead with the deal for myself.

While I have lots of black rifles, it will be nice to have a Colt again. My GAU-5/A/A clone has a Juggernaut Hellfighter fixed mag kit, with evil features, and is a range toy, I'll run the Colt featureless with a brake and Sparrow Dynamics grip. The OEM 1 comes without furniture or sights. I'll use an early Colt Fiberite CAR-15 stock and 7 hole Colt CAR-15 smaller handguard I have thats on my 300 BLK build. I also have a Colt Cardinal Forge detachable carry handle, a Magpul BUIS, and a SIG Romeo 5 2MOA red dot to choose from for sights. Should be a nice piece of kit when. I am done.

Got the upper. Did a bit of a change and got a complete upper with M4 handguards and Magpul BUIS. I'll put my SIG Romeo 5 red dot (2 MOA) with Mo-tac automatic on-off.Only change is an AIM Sports A2 style Muzzle break. Looks the same as a standard A2 flash hider, but has a closed exit area making it a break.

The barrel extension is Colt, and the barrel is a Rosco, 16" M4, chrome lined 1/7 with Colt Cage Code.

The lower will be stock, with the exception of a Sparrow Dynamics featureless grip and a Strike Industries stock block.

I had a 16" barrel along with my 14.5" and shot them together for comparison. The 16" shot very well with everything I tried, just a bit more accuracy I think for the little bit more barrel. That upper should work well for you.

Mated the CR6920 upper, that was shipped to me, with the CR6920 "Carbine" lower. Empty, with Magpul BUIS it weighed less than I expected at 6 pounds, 4 ounces.

Pictured it has the stock blocked with a Strike Industries stock block ($5), Sparrow Dynamics non-pistol grip, a Magpul 10/30 PMag, and an AIM Sports A2 Muzzle break. BTW, the safety on the 6920 is reversible! Works great for lefties, or if you have a fin-grip or Sparrow, you trigger finger flips it.

Do those ambidextrous safeties have the little notch cut on the other side to still be able to tell if it's on safe or fire? I've heard some have this notch (or tick) and some don't. Just curious

Yes but I'm talking about the other side (side of the safety without the lever). Some of them have little notches cut to where if you were facing the right side of the rifle, and your lever is on the left side, you could still tell if it's on safe or fire

I kind of got a real colt as well. Bought it for my dad in '91. Just got it from him still in the box. "Colt AR--15 light weight sporter" with two 5rd mags, (15 rd spacers in the 20 rd mags).
