    For 4th UNIS, 1st number is Regiment, 2nd number is Battalion, and 3rd number is Company. Whether that is true for the other divisions isn't known yet...

    Description: Major General Holland M. Smith, USMC, (center), commanding the V Amphibious Force ground forces, and Major General Julian C. Smith, commanding the Second Marine Division, inspect Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, in late November 1943. Marines under their command had just seized the island from the Japaneseicon. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.


    Here he is on Tarawa don't think it is the same guy in OP - note the helmet cover difference
