    National Match barrel symbol

    Does anyone know what this symbol is to the right of 1961 NM triangle?

    A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. The rifle was sold thru Erie Ordnance depot. I was told that they sometimes stamped a heart on NM rifle that past thru , wondering if this was remnants of heart symbol.

    From post by Bob Seijasicon

    Annual Marks - http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=35777
    1959 = Greek Cross, looks like the block Red Cross symbol
    1960 = 4-point star, looks like the stars in the Pittsburgh Steelers logo
    1961 = Triangle
    1962 = 5-point star, usually part of NM star PT in a row
    1963 = 7791036 NM barrel without annual code in the chamber area

    Heart

    AFAIK nobody knows. I assume it is an annual code like the other marks that I can identify. At one time I speculated that it might be a Rock Island code used after SA stopped making NMs in 1963. That's the only thing I can think of. No documentation has yet been found. It is sometimes found on the late 7781035 barrel not used until 1962/63 so it's late.
    Real men measure once and cut.

    Bob That was my rifle some years ago and my leg in that picture. Here is a pic of the paper work that came with it from Rock Island and the pick up order from DCP in Port Clinton when ready.. Rick Bicon
