oiler holder

Hello all, since the forum is kind of slow I thought I would post pictures of something I ran across about 5 or 6 years ago and bought for a little of nothing. It was advertised as a holder for an M1 carbine oiler in the stock without a sling. If I remember correctly the seller had two or three but to be honest, I haven't seen or heard of them since. Does anyone know if this is in fact made for the M1 carbine commercially or militarily and who made it? I've always collected odd things I run across for the carbine and I thought this fit in that category haha.Thanks in advance

Yeah when I bought it it was at least five or six years maybe longer. I'm not real good at judging the amount of time that has passed haha but I know it was at least 5 years ago. An oiler fits in it perfectly with it inside the stock. I bought it thinking maybe it was used for shipment of carbines or something similar. It didn't cost hardly anything at all so I quickly snapped it up just in case it was legitimate. With the oiler inserted in it, the sides of the oval cut out pinch it tightly in there to where it's actually hard to remove once it's in there. It's made of stamped metal

JonD, the oiler clip is mentioned/pictured in WB II and WB III. In WB II it was thought to be used to keep the oiler from rattling when inserted in a M1A1 stock however in WB III it revises that thought stating that the clip does not fit in the M1A1 slot, and its actual purpose is unknown.

They are also discussed in CCNL 222, where a club member had purchased some stocks directly from Anniston Army Depot and they came with oilers and these clips holding them in the oiler slot.

Thanks Bob! I had not found that thread at all or I wouldn't have even asked haha. I never thought to put the word retainer after oiler. I kept googling stuff but coming up empty!
