Wartime Wedding to a Canadian Soldier

I have this photo of a wartime wedding that I came across amongst a box of mainly old family photos. No-one in the photo is related to me but the caption on the back states that the bride is Evie Wells and the bridegroom, George, is a Canadianicon. Sadly it does not give a surname to the bridegroom, just his first name, George.

By the style of the wall of the church it is quite likely located in Essex.

I assume that the bridegroom is an officer because he appears to have the top of his battledress unbuttoned (presumably wearing a tie) and he appears to be wearing shoes, obviously without puttees/gaiters.

    Hopefully he survived the war.

"An officer you say? Well, that's some consolation I suppose!"

An unusually cheerful group and a charming looking girl, with good teeth running in the family too.

Papa resembles some figure I can't put a name on...hiding his smoke behind his right leg. Mama must have been quite a looker too, and from her unusual hairstyle in no hurry to become matronly either.

The photo has been retouched; see the groom's right hand and looks like the collar opening as well.

The best man's left pocket is open - from where he kept the ring?

The oldest boy aware he's losing his sister and and the younger not old enough to see it?

Let's hope she wasn't a war widow and he didn't return too different from the man she married.

Just as an afterthought I put "née Wells" and "Evelyn" into Google and this came up first: Evelyn Monro (née Wells) - Womens Land Army.co.uk

Here's the door of Clacton Church. I'd say case closed.

Though the church door has had a "medieval" restoration by the look of it.

Reading that page on the WLA a bit further answered my last sentence above I see.

The son might want that photo if you don't Flying 10uk. Had a very distant relation turn up in the UKicon who was very glad to have copies of what few photos I had of his mum as she had thrown all her photos away in a fit of pique earlier in life. The lady might enjoy a visit if you're not too far from Frinton-on-Sea and she could probably tell you how you came to have a copy of her wedding photo.
