A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Some soldiers shaved the stock to take off a bit of weight back in the day. Of course that was a big "no no" but some guys get crazy trying to save a few ounces.

I wrote an article for The GCA icon

Journal on a military study of gear GIs discarded to save weight, fascinating. The biggest was they saved EITHER the shoe packs or the galoshes, but never both. They tossed things for even a few ounces, like the mess kit forks, saved only the spoon. The results were good, IIRC they cut their load down from over 100 lbs to less than 60.
