Not to mention all the goodies in boxes and containers laying around!
No that's an M1 rifle. Two Rifles, two carbines and a .30 looks like cooling off. It always amazed me when you approach a forward position how two or three guys could be so differently involved in action. Guy at right seems to be taking a break while left is in contact.

Three carbine magazines laying on that crate, can't tell if they're loaded or spent and just laid there to be reloaded. Does anyone know what the black tube looking thing is just to the right of the carbine in the middle bottom of the picture?
There is what appears to be a "makeshift arm sling" slung from around his neck, positioned for his left arm which is not actually in the sling when the photo was taken.
I'm pretty sure it's just his shirt. You can follow the line of the edge of his shirt all the way from collar to that bulged out part. If you open the pic in another screen and expand it to 250% or even 300% you can see clearly.
