While I agree with you, Steve, I firmly believe the ascot he is wearing to be the worst uniform idea of all time - far worse than the white name tape.

Oh, I don't know. "Berets for all" is pretty sissy.

A lot of the items that my fellow members have described are for show and tell of a garrison-type uniform. Many were quickly dropped as we got involved in Vietnam and the realities of war changed things. The white name tape were quickly changed to olive drab, uniforms were no longer starched except for REMFs, The "US ARMY" tags were changed to match the soldier's name tag, black lettering on olive drab. The ascots were used to cover the white t-shirts they were changed to a green t-shirt and later a brown color. You may find an honor that still used these garrison-type uniform but as we got deeper into Vietnam and a real war many of the garrison BS fell by the way side.

We actually adopted those for a time too with one of our uniforms...would buy that very ascot from the PX in say, Ft Lewis WA. They were a rich man's idea I'm sure.

    Berlin Garrison

They were among the very first to get the new M14icon... here's a 1961 shot.

I'll just go ahead and say it - I never saw a marine wearing an ascot, ever.

LOL! Look closely at the men by the F100. There's a clown in every group. I do like the ABU's though in the JROTC pic. When I moved from Canadaicon to Texas I volunteered to join the National Guard but was told I was too old. Later I found out about the Texas State Guard which did allow me to join. It was an Air Support Group just transitioning from BDU's to ABU's so I was issued both. I thought the ABU's tigerstripe pattern was pretty cool, useless as camo, but cool.
