    OT: Impressions of "NEW" Hoppe's...

    gun oil???

Just bought a bottle over week-end, a very thin, water-like viscosity fluid, with a strong petroleum odor.

Used to with collection down before the humid season starts.

Anyone else using, what your impression.

I haven't bought any Hoppes gun oil (I do use their bore solvent though and firmly believe someone should make a mens aftershave / cologne that smells like it).
I've had success using Breakfree CLP for my anti corrosion needs and I used to live in MN where it was quite humid.

I might give it a try but for most purposes CLP has done well. I also bought some gun oil a few years ago from G-96 that is superb.

Recently I looked at CLP and it seems to me that the price has doubled. Guess it falls in with all the other gun products that have gone up in price.

With our heat and humidity in the Summer, I don't like to use too thin an oil.

Always wear gloves when using gun cleaning products. (Purple Nitrile are the best.) Work in a vented area.

Wow! What is it about Hoppe's bore cleaning solvent that women like so much. That stuff makes my wife very friendly. She's actually happy when I tell her that I gotta clean my weapon. All it does for me is make me dizzy if I've forgotten to open the garage door for ventilation. There must be mutant sex pheromones in the stuff.

I use Hoppes solvent, but their gun oil left me cold many years ago.

I used 4 common nails (uncoated) and cleaned them bright. Used four gun oils at my immediate disposal and coated each nail in a different oil. Hoppes, Firepower,(an oil I picked up at a gun show) Outers, and Break Free. I then dropped each one into a small baby food jar 2/3'rds filled with water and set them aside to watch the results.

Hoppes failed on the second day
    Firepower on the third.
    Outers on the tenth
Break Free didn't show signs of rust until well after two weeks. The Outers showed more signs of rusting but progressed at a snails pace.

In that two week span, the Hoppes & FP continued to rust until brown slime was a quarter inch thick on the bottom of the jar and the nail was pitted.
Not the oils I would trust to store guns long term in a humid region. I've been sold on BreakFree ever since. Not a speck of rust on any gun in storage. Even ones which have been sitting for years.

If the new Hoppes oil is improved, I would do the test again to see how it compares to BreakFree before trusting it.
