Swedish Mauser sights

I'm new to Swedish mausers. My son and I have been shooting Garands, Springfield 03A3's and M1 carbines for about a decade. We became interested in the Swedish mausers after borrowing one to use in the Vintage rifle match at Camp Perry last year. It shot well for us so I began the search for a couple of good shooters. I recently purchased a M96 off GunBroker that is fitted with the type or model 55 rear sight rather than the standard issue ladder type rear sight. My understanding is that this type of sight was fitted to some sniper rifles and may have been used to some degree in competition. Is that correct? Also, would this type of rear sight be disqualified for use in the Vintage rifle match under CMP rules? It was not standard issue but was military issue as I understand it. Thanks for any information.

Whether it would be disqualified depends on the rules of the sanctioning organization, I would think most would approve it but that's something you'll have to check.

It is my understanding, which may not be correct, that this was a not terribly uncommon modification. If I was going to shoot competition I would definately want the model 55 rear sight on my rifle.

I'm pretty sure the sight you've described was an issue item, and would meet the CMP's "as issued" rule. Diopters, are another story.

To delineate some, the m/55 was strictly for issue on the m/41b sniper rifle. Therefore, it would only be classified as "military use" on the m/41b. There are atleast three other civilian models that emulate the m/55. They are the AGJ-ram, F-ram and Pramm. These, again, are strictly civilian models and never military.

The issue of adjustable rear sights use at CMP has been discussed before. I do believe it was brought before the CMP board governing such issues. I never heard a positive conclusion and guess that the CMP declined their use.

The only adjustable rear sight that would meet the "military use" criteria would be the vasteras insert (with dial range from 300-600 or 250-600) installed on the m/38 rifles that were cut down from original m/96 rifles. The vasteras insert was a quick method to compensate for the shorter barrel and different bullet trajectory for a rifle still sporting an m/96 rear sight base. Later and as needed, the m/38 rear sight base and ladder were changed (specifically during rebarreling).
