I have a Colt conversion that I've shot thousands of rounds through. The original mag that came with it had a follower that was made of some kind of white metal. It didn't take long for the follower to ware out and fail to hold the slide open. I bought an aftermarket mag with a steel follower and have had no further hold open problems since. The one problem that has been continuous since the beginning, is the floating chamber. With ammo that tends to shoot a little sooty, or prolonged shooting, it doesn't take long for the floating chamber to soot up and fail to float. At that point, failure to feed is the norm. A good cleaning fixes the problem though.

The original followers were machined steel, and Colt really made a mistake when they went to the alloy follower.
I have always oiled the floating chamber with Break Free or Triflon, and never had any problems with the chamber hanging up. I always clean it thoroughly after each shooting session.

    Snafu,
I also have a fixed sight Colt conversion unit. I have no information about it except I purchases it used sometime in the late 1980's or early 1990's.

It came with two Colt magazine with WORN "pot" metal followers. I had to install an shape steel pins so the followers would activate the slide stop.

Best luck I have had with the floating chambers was to go to the Federal American Eagle 38 gr HVHP ammo. For some reason that stuff shoots MUCH cleaner than anything else. Have been using my unit since 1974 with various ammo, much of it CCI Green Tag.. Whereas some ammo will lock up the chamber in less than a box, I can put 250+ rounds of the Federal through it and the chamber still drops of its own weight with the slide open. Lubrication doesn't seem to be an issue. Not quite sure why but it works for me.
