Question Inherited M1 carbine seeking info

First let me say hello, as a newcomer to these forums. Looks like an interesting place!

I have inherited an M1icon Carbine and would appreciate any idea of exactly what I have and it's possible value.

It is marked US Carbine Cal. 30 at the top of the action and Inland Div and the serial number 488xxx at the base of the action.

The stock seems have just a smooth sanded finish, reddish in colour and is marked with a cartouche on the right side and a circled P (sans serif) on the bottom of the grip portion of the stock. Both the stock and the handguard are marked "10" inside so I assume it is an original matching set.

Barrel is marked on top just back of the front sight: Inland MFG Div., General Motors, 6-43. About halfway between that and the forestock is a P. It does not have the bayonet mount.

The F in MFG seems to be missing the small bar in the letter (or my eyesight is going).

Everything seems in excellent shape. I hope to have some pictures tomorrow.

I also have 3 magazines that need modification to be legal for use in Canadaicon being as they're 15 round. One is marked A1, one UW and the third K1.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thumbs up

Sounds like you may have an un altered - not rebuilt Carbine. IF so it should also have a flat top bolt, flip sight and push safety.
The Stock/handguard are not marked 10, but IO so yes matching to the carbine. I think your mags are AI & KI rather than A1 & K1 which, I think? - makes them also Inland. The other mag is Underwood. Some of the "xpertz" here will korrekt me ifn I's ronge!

Thanks for the reply. On closer examination you are correct, they are 'I' not '1' on the magazines.

The bolt top is indeed flat, the sights are flip and the safety is a push-button.

I have gotten some pictures up. Unfortunately my little digital camera isn;t very good at closeups or I'd do some closeups of the markings. The stock looks shiny but is actually matt finish on the wood.

Any idea what this unit might be worth?

Someone just mentioned on another forum it would be illegal for a buye in the US to import this (I'm in Canadaicon). Are they not legal in the US in some way (Seems a lot of them around for that to be the case)?

Looks like you have a really nice Inland M-1 carbine. The value on it, if it is all original will start around 12-1500 dollars, and go up from there. Depending on the internal parts. The front band looks to be a type I A and would be either unmarked or marked with a U or UI. The front sight could be un marked, or be stamped with an N SI or R. If you plan on keeping the rifle I would sugegest buying the book "U.S. M-1 carbines, wartime production" by Craig Riesch. it is filled with charts and photos of nearlly all of the parts made for the carbines, and will take you step by step on taking it apart, for cleaning and inspecting the internal parts. you have what looks to be a really sweet carbine. good luck.

As near as I can tell it is all original as far as I've taken it apart. I've not dismantled the bolt assembly nor the main trigger assembly - not feeling that adventurous yet .

The front sight has no markings at all, neither does the front band. My thumb does have a new marking however having gotten it "bit" by the bolt - ouch!
