Me thinks it was a stagged picture. He would have not been sporting his bright captians bars and watch like that in the bush or he could have been a new bee.

That's the way things were done back then. People learned fast though. When I was a cadet (mid 70s) a well traveled NCO told us aspiring officers that in a combat zone no one should have rank insignia, carry a pistol, have binos visible, or carry a map case. He told us that anyone who needed to know that we were officers would already know it. Of course standing next to the RTO was a give away!

Didnt matter much when I was there if you wore your rank or not...when you worked with the Arvin, they always shot at the tall ones first..

This pic. was taken in jun 64 when they wore bright color'ed rank and unit patche's, and white T shirts. in about 68-69 they got rid of all the pretty [parade] stuff and went to OD rank, if any at all, Helment cover's, plastic canteens. We caught on quick.

He must have been an advisor? 9th Marines didn't show up in Viet Nam until 1965 to protect Da Nang air base. I got there in Dec 1967, we had OD T shirts then. We did wear unit and rank patches and emblems, but then I was on river boats, not infrantry.
