03A1 Handguard?

Folks,

I'm looking at a 03A1 that appears to be "as issued."

Using Poyer 3rd Edition as my reference, everything appears to be matching up other than the handguard drawing number. Poyer states "D29179" on page 131. This rifle has "D28179" stamped on the handguard.

Any insight from the experts?

Brophy states on page 48. Some Late NM hand guards had the hand guard drawing number D28179 neatly stamped into the wood. Maybe a misprint in the Poyer book.

You're right, appears to be a one of those dis-connects between the two references.

I keep Poyer in the garage with my work bench and Brophy in house with my La-Z-Boy. ;)

Since we have these pictures of "D28179" as per Brophy, I wonder if anybody out there has a "D29179" stamped handguard?

So, are both numbers correct?

iv seen a couple different drawing numbers on Handgurds. but didnt write them down,
as far as being correct for a 1903A1? id say yes, for a 1million 4 or 1million5 serial number.
they used these as replacement parts for a while.
what i would look for, is,
late serial number range.
more parts with a drawing number. stock, handguard, rear sight base, sight asssembly, trigger, sear, cocking rod ect.
my late NM has all those parts numbered, as well as a CV marked cocking rod and trigger sear.
check you serial against SRS records, and see what comes up.
Bill Ricca has some drawing number info, maybe he can help.

Its S/N# 1500307 with a barrel date of 3-38 and a C stock. No hit on SRS.

So far the major parts are tracking for a 1938 rifle using the data I have (to include Ricca). Its showing all the normal wear of a issue weapon that was carried and handled alot yet it seems to have been fired very little. Bore looks very strong and it passes the bullet test. I will headspace it after a good cleaning.

I just picked it up today. This just might be what we car crazy nuts would call a "barn find."

For $550 that was a good buy on a C stocked 03. Were there any markings on the stock? The barrel does not have a turtle shape at 6 o'clock on the barrel muzzle does it?

Not a star gauged barrel. Has COL Samuel P. Green's inspector initials - SPG.

$550...., $550...., Who said anything about $550?????? ;)
