WW2 receiver, DOD stock - sand it?

I've got a CMP field grade Garand, good condition except for the stock. Receiver is Feb '44, rebarreled with a '52, lots of late internals. Stock has only a very faint DOD post war cartouche (eagle with three stars in a box, ~ 1/2" square) and is in pretty rough shape. Cleaning and steaming helped some, but still lots of dings and other issues. Any reason I shouldn't go ahead and do some sanding or scraping, considering that it's a mixmaster and post-war stock?

I will say leave it as is and look for the right stock if that is what yout intent is. The dod stock is worth something to the guy who needs it.

Do you consider Post War Garands and their stocks to be substandard?

No, but with it being a VERY faint postwar cartouche on a non-matching rifle, I wonder if the value or significance of the stock will be reduced much if I sand the stock in areas other than the cartouche. It's a pretty dinged up stock.

I'd trade it for a GAW in fair to decent condition...

You know that is not going to happen but you might be able to sell it to someone and get a down payment on the GAW. ;)

Really, it's your stock to do with whatever makes you happy.

If you want a pretty stock, I suggest selling your current stock to help defray the cost of a new stock set from the CMP Stock Sets or Dupage Available Rifle Stocks such as hand guards, trophy grips, low Wall stock, butt stock, sniper stock for sale.

A genuine USGI stock with genuine USGI markings, beat up as it may be, is worth something to someone. Put it on ebay emphasizing it is genuine and from the CMP, and with good pictures, and you might be suprised how much you get for it.
